Boot Camp was hard for me at first. In this month I feel I have gotten in better shape quicker than any other program I have tried. I only wish I would have participated all winter.

5:30am BC1It's 5:15am on a Thursday morning in February. The slightly humid air cloaks the atmosphere - fitting for a Texas winter. Jeremy Thiel pulls up next to me. His car is appropriately adorned with medicine balls, run ladders, and dumbbells. Headlights approach in the distance, their beams of light bouncing from the ground and reflecting through the dewy mist. A car accelerates around the corner, screeches to a halt, is thrown into reverse, and swings into a parking space. A man emerges from the car arms straight in the air with clenched fists in a champion pose. Jeremy leans over, "That's Erik - he's really just a big kid!" I stand back and watch the campers arrive to class. Despite the early morning roll call they're energetic and talkative. It has only been a day since they last saw each other, but they have much to catch up on.

Each person in the CrossFit Outdoor program signed up for different reasons. They are from different backgrounds and lifestyles, have different responsibilities and obligations, and range in fitness capabilities, age, and gender. But, twice a week at 5:30am this all fades into the background as these individuals share their lives with one another, encourage each other, and indulge in the celebration of each other's achievements.

Jeremy leads various exercises intended to prepare their bodies for the morning's workout while everyone counts aloud and whenever possible, they fit in the last of pieces of their conversation. They know the workout ahead doesn't allow for much conversation outside of encouraging words.

The 12 participants follow Jeremy's instructions through a partner med ball circuit. Jeremy corrects their movements and urges them to push through the workout. Simultaneously the participants are encouraging each other and ensuring their partners are receiving maximum benefits from the exercise. "Stretch your arms all the way up" one camper says to another.

530ambc9.jpg"The CrossFit Outdoor Boot Camp program isn't just about working out,"says Jeremy Thiel. "This program is created to produce an environment that allows people to come together and form friendships while getting in the best shape of their lives. CrossFit Central offers a phenomenal program lead by the best coaches. We keep the group numbers small, our programs only allow 15 people to join. This provides an optimal environment for relationships to form. If the group were any larger it would begin to fragment."

Jeremy goes on to say that CrossFit Outdoor Boot Camps are modeled after High School Strength and Conditioning Programs due to the team building and unity found inside these programs. "The workouts are challenging for everyone no matter how fit you are. The individuals all feel this same sense at once and are able to relate with one another on this level. Team Unity is formed through individuals working together with a common goal in mind. Everything we do in this program helps to create a comfortable, encouraging, and team environment."

Becky Cunningham, a CrossFit Outdoor member for over 18 months says the reason she has formed great friendships inside the camp is because, "It's not about what you do for a living, these are your friends because you workout together. It's something we all have in common."

Others believe that the experience inside the boot camp is elevated due to the encouragement from the other participants. Amanda Adams, who has been attending for a little over a year says that, "A lot of the women inspire me to try harder. They were very motivating and supportive. I've made some very good friends along the way."
