How did you learn about Crossfit?
I heard about Crossfit through Sarah Stewart, who is an old friend of mine that actually trains for Crossfit Central. I had just graduated from Texas Tech University and moved to Austin with high expectations. I got a job personal training at a typical overpriced box gym, and to say the least, it was short lived. I knew I wanted to be involved in the fitness industry, but I also knew that the corporate gym world wasn’t for me. One day while lounging at the pool, I called up my old friend Sarah and asked her for advice. She began telling me about Crossfit and I was immediately sold. The awesome team of coaches at Crossfit Central has welcomed me in with open arms and has taught me more in the past few months than anything I have learned over the past few years of my studies. Crossfit has opened my eyes and mind to a whole new level of fitness.
What has the Crossfit method of training done for your life?
My entire life I have been an athlete and a competitor. I started out young playing sports and competing in athletics. In high school I played basketball, volleyball, and ran track and thought I was at the top of my game physically. After high school I stayed very active and involved with my fitness, but until recently I didn’t realize I was going about it the wrong way. Until Crossfit came into the picture, I had entered a daily routine of monotonous workouts in the weight room, and the typical cardio workout on the treadmill, always staying in shape but never increasing my level of fitness. Since starting Crossfit about 3 months ago, my new level of fitness knocks the socks off the old “fit” me. Using the Crossfit method of competing against your own times and your fellow Crossfitters pushes me to an entirely new fitness level. My physical strength and endurance had already drastically increased and is only going to continue to reach higher levels.
How do you bring your education into your client 1 on 1 training sessions?
My degree in Exercise & Sports Science has a great influence on how I go about training my clients. My experience with biomechanics of the body helps me to know how a person should be moving and performing different activities, and to help correct them on form that might lead to injury. Studying the body and its muscles has also helped me to understand the most important areas of our body that need training and strengthening for everyday functional movement. I also have a minor in Food & Nutrition which allows me to council clients on making positive eating choices. With Nutrition being such a huge role in developing ones highest level of fitness, I find that being able to offer advice to clients on this matter is crucial.
