| Interview with Jim Cawley |
Medicine Balls are a part of fitness training that many of us are familiar with. These weighted tools are a crucial part of any fitness regimen, but many are not using the ball to its fullest potential to receive maximum results.
Jim Cawley, founder of Dynamax, points out that these medicine balls appear to be an object you can simply pick up and begin training with; however, there is a very precise method of medicine ball training that one must use in order to receive the best results possible. In the following interview Jim Cawley explains this training and also why working with a medicine ball is the best training tool he's found. How was Dynamax created? I've always been an athlete and a coach. In my training I couldn't find a medicine ball that wouldn't shred. With the older versions you would throw it a couple of times and it would split open. So I decided to design a medicine ball. We made the first one and it went from there. Suddenly UT coaches, high school coaches, and professional athletes wanted the ball we designed because of the quality of the ball. ![]() What does working with a medicine ball do for a person and their fitness level? When you are working with a medicine ball there are two ways to tax the muscular system, weight and velocity. There are so many different things you can do with a med ball, the training is unlimited. This would be different from weight training? Yes. For example if you're doing a bench press you're not concerned with how fast you'll move that bar, but with a med ball you can throw it. So you have the component of not only the weight of the ball but also the velocity of the movement. You can take a 6lb. medicine ball and train a group of people of all different fitness levels. If you are throwing the 6lb. ball at full velocity all fitness levels will get results from that 6lb. medicine ball. Is this type of training for everyone? I would say that the best thing about this training is that I use it with Parkinson's patients and world class athletes! If I ever leave the med ball out of a workout they will ask me to put it back in. Is it better to have a partner when working with a medicine ball or are there benefits to working individually with the ball? Everything that you do with a partner you can do solo. USC athletes will take the ball out on the field and do different throws individually. But it's not going to be as fun or dynamic. But, working with a medicine ball is not like picking up a weight and doing some reps. You have to get the technical set up right to get the full amount of power and see the best results. The medicine ball is best used with a skilled trainer. ![]() This December you will have the opportunity to receive training from Jim Cawley at the CrossFit Seminar . The seminar is limited to only 15 participants, and it's filling up fast! Be sure and reserve your spot today! |
